Plavix Clopidogrel

You can’t escape them. You know, the nightly onslaught of commercials for Plavix. They are everywhere. While the commercials provide some basic information, do you really know what you should about Plavix Clopidogrel?

Interestingly, many people search for information on the internet, often using the term Plavix Clopidogrel. It is a combination of the Trade Name Plavix and Clopidogrel. Clopidogrel is the actual chemical name that was given to the compound as it was manufactured in the lab, before it was marketed and given the Trade Name Plavix.

Let’s explore the main use for Plavix. It is used to reduce the clot formation in the body. The way that it does this is by interfering with the platelet formation. Platelets work by stacking one on another, which then forms the clot.

Clotting after an injury is the body’s natural defense against blood loss. These injuries could range from bruising to cuts or lacerations. Did you know that there are actually other events that trigger clotting in the body?

An example of this is when plaque formations build up on the walls of the arteries. As the platelets form around the plaque, they could produce clots that either partially or totally block the normal flow of blood throughout the body.

This blockage could lead to multiple medical problems such as stroke and heart attack.

So what are some of the medical conditions that Plavix is prescribed for?

Cardio-pulmonary disorders that include heart attack, chest pain, strokes of an ischemic-nature, and even peripheral artery disease, can be treated with Plavix. This is due to the anti-platelet action of Plavix.

This medication may also benefit those with Acute Coronary Syndrome. This also is related to platelet formation. Unstable angina is often the term used for chest pain that is cardiac in nature and part of the ACS disease process.

Is it wise to take Aspirin along with Plavix?

This is a question that many ask and the simple answer is yes. In fact, it is recommended that you take Aspirin (as prescribed) in addition to Plavix on a daily basis. This only enhances the clot-fighting abilites of Plavix.

At this juncture, it should be mentioned that your bleeding times are increased as a result of taking these drugs. It is important that you take extra care when finding yourself in potentially dangerous situations that may involve a higher risk of lacerations or bruising.

Clopidogrel, along with Aspirin, provides a much higher level of protection against Stroke and Heart Attack if you have never incurred one, and also the likelihood of repeat events, if you have already suffered a Stroke or Heart Attack.

Are there any conditions that would prevent me from taking this medication? Any history of stomach ulcers or bleeding-related disorders are examples of conditions that do preclude the use of Plavix. This is due to the increased risk of bleeding from the action of the medication.

Consult with your physician closely regarding the use of this medication. There will be additional tests that the doctor will order that involves the use of Labwork to insure that your bleeding times are within treatment guidelines. Used properly, Plavix Clopidogrel has demonstrated it’s effectiveness in treating the formation of clots in the body and in providing future protection against devastating Heart Attacks and Strokes.
